So now, after some final changes all parts for the server are ordered. I had to change the specs at the last moment…
On the day that alternate sent me an offer for the server, I noticed that they added a lot of products to their site. As it
turns out, they are now also selling Core Duo (the successor to the
Pentium M) mainboards. And, even better, one of these boards is an
ASUS, which I trust more than other brands as far as mainboards is
concerned.
Also, the ASUS features a PCIe x16 slot which is, as it seems, not
limited to graphics only. In particular, I noticed the chipset (945G)
also on one of the compatibility lists of another RAID card, so that
one should work. So in addition, I ordered a Highpoint 2310 card which
requires a PCIe x4 slot.
Now, basically everything is underway, the PC will be assembled within
a couple of weeks and the other stuff should arrive earlier. Let the
fun begin!
Here are the complete specs:
- ASUS P4L-VM motherboard
- Intel Core Duo 1666 (T2300) processor
- 2GB of DDR2-667 Kingston memory
- 400GB Maxtor SATAII disk (will need to buy two additional ones to complete the array)
- DVD Rom + floppy (very cheap)
- Highpoint RocketRaid 2310
- Aopen H420A tower
- FIrmtek/Seritek 2EN2 external storage
- PCI bracket 2 SATA -> 2 eSATA converter
- SuSE linux 10.1
The server will arrive without the highpoint card and with the disk
built in so I will have to do some ‘redecorating’ to get it all to work
together. I am really excited about this.
